Watch Out Vancouver: Foe and Dear is making it's mark!

You're welcome Van City, here's the latest and greatest: Foe and Dear Jewelry

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY and WOW!

Born in Vancouver, jewelry designer Katherine Huie blends her innate West Coast style with an East Coast edge to create beautiful and bold one-of-a-kind pieces for the fashion savvy. Currently, Katherine resides part-time in New York City and Toronto - What a perfect combination of influences! Following a degree in Fashion Design, Katherine’s love of vintage jewelry set against contemporary pieces inspired the line Foe and Dear. Founded in 2008 Foe and Dear reconstructs vintage items using new hardware, chains, and gems for unique, custom jewelry. Inspired by found objects, Foe and Dear designs are original and hand-made. Each piece is crafted with a passion for design and a love for even the smallest of details. As a result, the lucky people who purchase these lovely creations feel as though they have found something incredibly special, made just for them.

Katherine, before Foe and Dear you had another name for your jewelry line. It was called Lush Bind. What inspired the change?

Initially, the line was called Lush Bind... As in: lush and bind; to wrap something around another object. It was fairly successful, but I felt it was lacking a little direction. It [Lush and Bind] was my first attempt at running a successful business. Obviously there were great things that had happened, but I also learned from a few things as well. It all changed when I temporarily moved to New York City. I was so inspired by the City, and all of the creative, motivated people. I wanted to evolve and create a more simplified, yet still distinct brand that offered unique jewelry using vintage and new materials combined... Which is exactly what I did.

What inspired you to design jewelry in the first place?

I started designing jewelry in high school, just as a personal hobby. Self taught, I never thought I would make it a legitimate business. I went to Ryerson University in Toronto for fashion design. I had always enjoyed making jewelry and especially liked making pieces for myself, family, friends, and friends of friends. My jewels were getting a lot of hype, so I did a little research and made it happen!

What are some of your favorite pieces from your most recent collection?

1) Hungry Gold Bug - This necklace sits perfect on your collarbone. It is the center piece of your outfit.

2) Momma's Pearl Ring - Simple, classy, fresh water pearl, and a bit of sparkle.

3) Whale Stud Earrings - Because they're so darn cute!

I absolutely LOVE Momma's Pearl, it's definitely a go-to piece. Now that you are continuing to build on your successful business, what are your plans for the future?

More traveling! This is because traveling = more inspiration = more awesome pieces! As of right now, Foe and Dear is in two boutiques, one in LES of Manhattan: 'We the People' (156 Stanton Street) and 'Tabula Rasa' (745 Broadview Avenue), which is in Greektown, Toronto. More future plans include: being consistent with updating all of my social networks (site, blog, twitter, facebook, etc.), learning how to melt and plate metal, and to keep making rad jewelry.

Amazing!

BOUTIQUE OF THE WEEK: Privilege Clothing

Privilege Clothing Boutique

Privilege Clothing Boutique is one of my absolute favorite contemporary shopping go-to's for seasonal trends and exclusive labels. I recently interviewed the owner, Donni Edmonson, about her inspiration to open this suburban boutique clothing store... have a look!

Privilege Clothing Boutique
opened its first location in Langley on November 23, 2007 and has been a popular shopping hit ever since. Stemmed from simply noticing a void in the market for good clothing boutiques in Langley, Donni Edmonson convinced herself to take a risk and open one of the first current and trendy clothing boutiques.

"I have resided in Langley for quite some time, and as a resident here I long ago noticed that if you wanted to buy designer clothing - or even merely a cute top to wear out on the weekend - you would have to go downtown (Vancouver) to find it."

As for the Port Moody location, Donni frequented Suter Brook a number of times and appreciated the quaintness of the village. The modern development of the area provided her with the foundation for a second Privilege location. Donni's fundamental idea was to open a boutique that provided a vast collection of name brands, with an expansive variety of price ranges - at competitive prices... and it proved to be a success!

Isn't it every girls dream, to be able to shop for a living??

"Privilege is simply a mirror image of everything that I love. That is the greatest part of my job, to be able to shop for a living. I never buy a product for either of my stores that I do not LOVE. Menswear aside, the women's collection is clearly influenced by my love of anything girly or feminine. [Upon entering the boutique] you will notice my appreciation for the skinny jean, anything silk or flowy, or maybe a cute little dress".

Privilege
carries such an abundant array of labels, which are nothing short of fabulous. Shoppers will definitely find what they are looking for, plus more!

So, what are her picks for this season??

"I LOVE LOVE LOVE Wildfox!" She proclaims, and so do we!

Wildfox -Love Potion N. 9 tank

"[Wildfox] is such a cute, fun, summer brand of women's tops that are casual enough to wear with shorts on a hot summers day. I also love the "Jegging" which has come in quite handy for the mixed weather we have experienced so far this summer. These jeggings are lightweight and pair well with flats or sandals, but still keep their denim appeal intact to wear with boots next season. I personally own all of the colors!"

As for her personal FAV...

"A brand called Wish from Australia. We started carrying it this month (June), and it is my favorite at the moment that exemplifies the perfect collaboration of class, poise, and fashion. I highly recommend it, and I have personally victimized my credit card to buy many of the current pieces".

As for me, I absolutely love the all of the Fluxus tanks and tee's, the Sienna Ray handbags, and of course, anything 212.
